Saga of Nursery Admissions in Noida

Disclaimer: This post is based on my understanding and personal opinion on the Nursery admissions in various schools across Noida. It is not meant to demean or propagate any particular school or the way of schooling.

From friends, colleagues, internet and newspapers, everywhere I heard or read: I thought that getting my kid admitted to Nursery would be a big painful situation. Was it or was it not, you can decide based on the facts that I will mention below.

Entry age/eligibility criteria
There is no standard being followed across schools. Some mention it as 3+, some as 3.5+, some as 3.3+ in either September or March. So, that really confused me. My son is February 2010 born. We had decided that we'll admit him in Nursery when he is ready for it and will not push him. So, decided to go for the admission process in September 2013 and by the time he goes to Nursery, he would be 4+, which we feel is fine. No, he is not 'loosing' on a year as many parents feel!

Which school?
The next big question is whether to apply to all the schools or pick and choose from the wide variety. As per my understanding, there are 4 categories of schools present, based on their fee structure:

Category 1: The very big ones like Pathways, Genesis Global- Fees > 2.5 lakhs per year
Category 2: The big ones like Lotus Valley, Step by Step, SriRam Millenium, Kothari - Fees : 1.5 to 2.5 lakhs per year
Category 3: The middle tier ones, like The Millennium, KR Mangalam, Ryan, Billabong. - Fees : 1 to 1.5 lakhs per year.
Category 4: The conventional brand names like Appejay, DPS, Sommerville - Fees upto 1 lakh per year
Category 5: Rest of the world.

Now, categories 1,2 and 3 are the so called 'new age' and international schools that charge you a bomb and claim to pay individual attention to your child. They do not pressurize the kids too much and do not give much of homework. Generally the class strength is upto 25 or max 30 students in some cases. They also have the latest infrastructure, labs and co-curricular activities.

Category 4 are the ones who have made a name for themselves over past so many years. Their claim to fame is good education and academics.  These are the schools that you and I went to in our times. Generally the class strength can go upto 40 to 50 students.With so many students in a class, you can safely forget about individual attention, but then probably your child would learn to face the big, bad world right from an early age.

So, before blindly applying everywhere and unnecessary running around, think and decide what kind of school you want. Of course, one needs to work out the finances too! On that note, do not compare just the first year fees because that comes out to be more due to the admission charges. Do compare the second year onwards fees, like we did:

What and how did we choose?
We were clear that we wanted him to go to one of these 'new age' schools, so that he gets a good exposure to everything apart from just academics. Also, the class strength of 40+ students bothered me. So, we had to choose from Category 2 and 3. Category 1 was way over budget.
I started talking to my colleagues and friends whose kids go to a variety of these schools and applied only to the ones about whom we had first hand information : The Millenium, KR Mangalam, Lotus Valley and SriRam Millenium.

The Process
Collect admission form, fill and submit in the school along with the registration fees. For some schools, the form is available online for download. I think schools should go online with the form submissions as well and incorporate net banking for charging the registration fees.
After submission, the school will get back to you with the interaction date and time.

The Interaction
Now this is one thing which feels and looks like a competitive battle to be won. The anxiety levels in parents are very high and they end up pressurizing the child a lot. If you go to the category 4 schools, the interaction is definitely a detailed one where they ask poems, shapes, colors, etc from the child. The parents are also asked a variety of questions ranging from their education, why they've chosen this school, who stays with the kid after school, etc.  Also, the number of applications is very high in these schools due to their brand names and affordable fee structure, so the number of rejections is also high. Be mentally prepared, keep some backups ready and don't rely on one particular school.

For category 1,2 and 3, the interaction is more of a meeting with the parents and child and they mostly converse with the child to see whether he is responsive. For example, in The Millenium, the teacher incharge talked about the school to us and asked the kids their names . In KR Mangalam, the kids were being taken to separate rooms and asked everything and anything that they knew. Dhruv was not ready to go in a separate room, so we accompanied him and after that he answered whatever was asked.

If your child does not want to go with a strange teacher at a strange place, please insist that you want to accompany him. It is important for the child to feel comfortable and if the teacher/in-charge does not agree to it, better walk out since that's not the place where you want your child to be.

In Lotus Valley, the interaction lasted for 3-4 minutes where teachers and principal were in the same room. The kids were being asked basic questions while the principal made small talk with us.

The Result
Once you get 'selected' in the schools, work out the pros and cons of those schools and get your child admitted. No school is good or bad. Its just about what you want for the child. Trust your instincts and pay the fees!! We've paid it for Lotus Valley!!

  • Rhumjhum,
    Nice write up! My wife forwarded this to me.Based on your write up ;I guess, Indian schooling system has changed a lot.

    Just out of curiosity , what are Meal charges for ?Also,in your case(lotus Valley), those charges are missing ?

  • Excellent Write-Up!!
    I would everyone should read it.

    I like the line - "no school is good or bad" - its we who needs to decide what exactly what we want from the school.

  • Thanks for the motivating words Kush.

    Mr. Anonymous: Some schools provide meals in the school and hence charge for it. In case of Lotus Valley, the meals are optional and the child can take tiffin from home as well. So, they haven;t charged for it upfront. Whoever opts for it, an pay the meal charges as well.

  • How did you come to know that your child was ready for school? Was it your instinct?

  • Thanks Rhumjhum.. nice write up..

  • Yash,
    He has been going to a playschool since more than a year now. Has become a confident child,talks a lot and enjoys going to school. Moreover, he is 3.5 yrs old and by the time will go to the big school, would be 4+. Had I admitted him when he was 3, it would've been a mistake. That time, he hardly spoke and was not very independent.
    So all these things made me decide that now he is ready.

  • Good one! Am sure this will help the new parents big time! Now you should write on 'what to expect when you child starts formal school'.

    By Blogger Smita Dhall, at 9:56 PM

  • Smita,
    Yeah I can become a child-psycho analytic!! Will do that once he actually starts going there 7 months down the line or after I attend the first orientation.

  • Nice Rumjhum. U have become a blog writer. :) But reallly this is quite helpful for parents like us .. Since my elder one is 2 now, we have also started thinking in this direction, but am sure not to send her to any school, even playschool before 3 and before she can clearly express herself. When did u started sending Dhruv to playschool? what age?

    By Blogger Yojna Sah Jain, at 10:16 PM

  • I sent Dhruv to playschool at the age of 2.5

    My situation I'd say. My daughter Vanya is April born and I got just "too many" suggestions to get her birthdate corrected back by a month so that she can start school at 3. I ignored that advice. Thanks for writing about this particularly - helps re-strengthen the decision.

  • Very nice RJ. I liked the XLS part since it gives a good view of expenses. Well composed, effective blog. Nice. :-)

    I guess deciding on school is the toughest part. To add, except Step by Step where it is very hard to get in since they prefer their own play-school kids, most of the schools in cat1,2,3 are easier to get into. So if you have decided for one of the schools there, you have done the hard work.

    Cat 4 as you noted is a different ball game altogether. These schools have built a massive equity over last tens of years and they are now reaping that by having 50+ students in each section, making the admission process cumbersome and difficult and so on. I hope someone brings some order there and makes it more of a lottery or some kind of points system (like Delhi). It is a character building experience going through the process for these schools :-). But once your ward is in, they do assure decent acad + co-curicular and in my opinion, they make your ward stretch well in initial foundation years.

    All the best.

  • Hi Rumjhum,,

    I also admitted my daughter to Lotus valley ( nursery 2014-15 batch), so may be our children will be class mates..
    Congrats to both of us on choosing a good school.

    If you don't mind, can you share you views on age limit for nursery, in detail.
    My daughter will be just 3 when she go to nursery next year. will she be too young? why doesn't she stand to loose one full year If I were to wait one more year.

    or to view the same question with a different angle.

    What is the ideal age to finish schooling?
    Does children aged 17 or 18 perform very differently in their board exams, or later in life?

    By Anonymous Maneesh Tevatia, at 2:58 AM

  • Thanks Manoj. As i said, get them admitted when you feel they are ready.Some kids are outgoing and talkative even before they are 3, so I guess for them its ok to go to a big school at 3!

    Nandan, well you should guess who did the xls part!!

    By Blogger Rumjhum, at 3:53 AM

  • Hi Maneesh,
    I feel that in the long run, it does not matter even if the child is a year behind in Nursery.

    Some kids are talkative and outgoing at the age of 3, so probably for them its fine to go to a big school. My child did not talk much till last year and we felt that sending him to Nursery might be pushing him at that age.So had we gone for admissions in last September, I'm sure it would've been a tensed situation for us as well. On the contrary, when we went this year,our child was confident and so were we!

    By Blogger Rumjhum, at 4:00 AM

  • Thankyou so much Rhumjhum for sach a nice blog! It is really a tough job to choose a school for our kid as its a matter of their life. I think & I like your view also that " No school is Bad or Good" its only that we should decide before hand what actually we want from the school. My hubby & I think that school only helps a child to grow, learn, gain knowledge etc in the real sense WE " The Parents " are the one who can imbibe good learnings, qualities, knowledge in a child. Your blog is really helpful.. we are really getting confused for admission of our daughter " Mihika" who is 2.7 at present.

  • So if I ask you to rank the below schoolin which order will you rank them?
    * Shriram Millenium
    * Khaitan International
    * DPS Noida
    * Amity
    * Lotus Valley
    * Mayoor International
    * Global Indian International
    (Sec 71)
    * Somerville
    * Vishwabharti
    * Father Agnols

    By Blogger Unknown, at 6:22 AM

  • Thanks Payal.
    The schools that you have listed belong to different categories and cannot be compared against each other. It would be like comparing apples and oranges.
    for instance: Lotus Valley or SriRam are the new age schools whereas Somerville, Father Agnel, DPS are more of conventional schools.
    As I mentioned in my blog, we did not apply to the conventional ones, so I do not have much idea about those individually.
    You can probably check out the forums on http://www.admissionsnursery.com/
    to get a detailed idea about the individual schools.

  • Thanks Kamlesh. I think all that might have changed is the growing number of applicants and more schools.

    By Blogger Rumjhum, at 8:47 PM

  • my thought little bit long, have patience to read :)

    My total Edu. expenses till date :-
    1) 1st to 5th (no funda of LKG and UKG), (it was public schoo, with admission fee 100 rs appx then 40 Rs per month appx and annual inc): Total for 5 years (including books etc) : Appx 7000 upto 5th
    2) 6th till 10th was less expensive as went to Govt school :). Now Admission fees around 500 Rs but monthly fee appx 12 Rs (really) and in 10 call it was 23.50 Rs per month. so total for 5 years is was again appx 10000

    3) XI and XII (Non Med) I went to college got scholar ship on 10 mark and it 1100 admission fee and 300 per quarter.
    again total for 2 years 5000 RS
    4) BCA (10 yrs back ) was costly 8000 admission and 1000 in 2d year and 12000 Rs in finally.
    Other monthly expense it lead to Rs 50000 (on higher note)
    5) MCA : Didnot work hard to get admission in in govt college , my pvt college admssion was 50000 per annum and some petrol, masti and lab etc cost 70000 per annum
    total for 3 years R 210000

    So appx cost of my 18 years education cost me appx 285000

    I know there last 10 years cots of living and inflation has gone too much. 300000 per year is too much.

    I got good values , education , knowledge from by village's school teachers and city's institute.

    I really don't understand why there so much hoopla of shaping your child here in ncr/metro city . Kids can get bad values from good school and somebody can be genius in bad school. We just want to improve our chances
    Don't put so much pressure on kid from beginning.

    From my village few kids (without any extra coaching or tuition ) have been very good doctor,scientist and engineer in top notch countries and companies.Same thing here few %age of kid reach there. So I think most imp is how do you treat you kid at home . these Lotus , step ... would not help much.

    Do not put your kid in box from class I and so that after 12 years of education he just see 2 paths : DOCTOR or ENGINEER.
    We know we engineer do too much analysis and still get trapped in these schools. 80% of these school and just need MONEY .

    We engineer do a lot of analysis start making picture of 20 years right now for our kids...

    Long write up (my Eng no so good) , ending here Let your child live a different life where he she don't feel pressured to conform to society

    all the best for school hunting

  • Mr. Anonymous,

    I agree that the cost factor is really high, but then cost of everything has sky-rocketed!!

    However, just because something wasn't available in our times and is available now, does not make it bad.
    So, if we did not have mobile phones 10 years back, does not mean that we will not use them now.
    Similarly, such international schools were not present when we went to school.
    I am not in favour of making my child just an engineer or doctor. Rather, I'll be happy to give him an opportunity where he can choose what he wants to be.
    These schools give a good exposure in everything apart from stressing only on academics. So,he might know what all are the options available in the world. Also,I strongly believe that having a good environment in your foundation years shapes you what you are and that environment comes from school as well as home.
